600mm vs 800mm Towel Rails: Which Width Fits? UK

Quick answer

An 800mm towel rail needs 200mm more body width than a 600mm model. Choose between them using the complete installed footprint, towel layout and actual model output. The wider rail is not automatically the better heater or the cheaper option to run.

Test both complete footprints

Mark the proposed body width and height on the wall using a temporary method that will not damage the finish. Then add the space required by the selected valves, pipework and access. Open nearby doors and drawers and consider where a hanging towel will sit.

Do not compare only two width measurements on a product title. A low, wide rail and a tall, narrower rail can use the room very differently.

Record the available wall width, height and depth separately from radiator body dimensions. Use the height and towel-space guide to check the vertical arrangement too. A narrower body does not guarantee that a taller alternative will fit.

Check your actual towels

Measure the towels you normally use, including their folded width. Extra horizontal space may give a more convenient hanging arrangement, but usable bars, gaps and overlapping fabric matter. Neither width guarantees two unfolded bath sheets will fit side by side or dry within a particular time.

Think about who uses the bathroom and when towels need drying. If the rail gets hot but towels stay damp, check the drying conditions first rather than buying width alone.

Compare suitable models under the same conditions

Match heating type, body height and finish where possible, then compare the actual stated output and rating conditions. Width by itself is not an output specification. A taller 600mm-wide rail can be a different heating choice from a low 800mm-wide rail.

Within the 800mm range alone, the 600mm-high chrome listing states 402W and the 1200mm-high chrome listing states 833W. That shows why the second dimension matters. Confirm the applicable system conditions before using either figure.

Work through the room-heating selection process.

Include pipework and installation cost

A wider replacement can require different pipe positions, valves, brackets or wall repairs. Do not assume the 200mm increase in body width translates into the same pipe alteration for every valve arrangement. Compare the drawings and complete assemblies.

Ask the installer to include required alterations and commissioning in the quotation. A lower radiator price may not mean a lower total installed cost.

Prepare the pipework and support checklist.

Use the pipe-centre measuring guide to label the existing connection measurements. Compare the exact proposed model drawing and chosen valves; body width does not tell you the complete valve-to-pipe arrangement.

Make the width decision, then choose the finish

  • Choose 800mm when its complete footprint fits and the broader rail layout is useful.
  • Consider 600mm when wall width or access is restricted, subject to the chosen model’s output.
  • If neither meets both the room requirement and the layout, discuss another arrangement rather than compromising either check.

Once 800mm is shortlisted, compare black and chrome at matching heights. Use the black buying guide or the chrome buying guide for the available height choices. Browse extra wide towel rails and narrower layout options.

Frequently asked questions

How much wider is an 800mm towel rail than a 600mm model?

The radiator body is 200mm wider. That is not the complete installation difference: valves, pipework, projection, access and required clearances must be checked for each model.

Will an 800mm rail always give more heat than a 600mm rail?

No. Compare the exact model height, design, finish and output at compatible operating conditions. Width alone does not establish the heat delivered to the bathroom.

Will the wider rail hold more towels?

It may offer a more convenient horizontal layout, but check usable bar length, bar gaps and your towel sizes. Neither width guarantees a particular towel count or drying time.

Can I replace a 600mm rail with an 800mm rail without changing the pipes?

Do not assume so. Compare the connection centres, wall distance and complete selected valve arrangement. Have the installer confirm whether pipe alterations, new brackets or wall repairs are needed.

Is a 600mm towel rail cheaper to run?

Width alone cannot establish running cost. The heating system, required heat, controls and operating time matter. For an electric model, check the actual element rating and usage rather than inferring consumption from the radiator width.

Which width should I choose if the wall is tight?

Choose a model whose complete installed footprint and access requirements fit the space while meeting the heating plan. If neither option works, discuss another height, position or heating arrangement rather than reducing required clearances.

Complete the width choice

For a larger room, the large-bathroom guide keeps towel-hanging space separate from room heat. Complete the pre-order checklist once both output and fit are clear. Ask the Coventry team about the shortlisted models if a specification needs clarification.
