How To Choose The Right Size Of Towel Radiator

How To Choose The Right Size Of Towel Radiator

To choose the right size of towel radiator (also called a towel rail) for your bathroom, you need to consider two main factors:

✅ 1. Heat Output (BTUs or Watts)

You need enough heat to warm the room and dry towels. This is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) or Watts.

🔢 General BTU Guidelines (for average bathrooms):

Bathroom Size Room Dimensions (approx) Required BTUs Required Watts
Small (En-suite) 2m x 2m ~1000–1500 300–450 W
Medium Bathroom 2.5m x 2.5m ~2000–3000 600–900 W
Large Bathroom 3m x 3m+ ~3000–4500 900–1300 W

Note: If your bathroom is poorly insulated or has large windows, add ~10–20% more BTUs.

✅ 2. Physical Size of the Radiator

Once you know the heat output you need, look for a towel radiator that delivers that many BTUs or Watts. The physical dimensions depend on:

  • Wall space available (height & width)

  • How many towels you want to hang

  • Pipe centres (if replacing an old radiator)

Example Sizes:

Radiator Size (H x W in mm) Heat Output (Watts)
800 x 500 mm ~300–400 W
1200 x 500 mm ~500–700 W
1600 x 600 mm ~800–1000 W

🛠️ How to Calculate It Precisely:

You can use an online BTU calculator where you input:

  • Room dimensions (length × width × height)

  • Double or Single Glazing windows

  • Type of Room
