Towel Radiator BTU Calculator (UK) – How Much Heat Do You Need?

Quick answer
Choose a towel radiator by comparing the room’s estimated heat requirement with the model’s published output at your heating system’s operating temperature. Check wall space, pipe centres and towel capacity too; width alone does not tell you how much heat a radiator delivers.
Use the room’s heat-loss requirement to choose a towel radiator, then check its rated output at the temperature of your heating system. A room-volume calculation is an estimate, not a detailed heat-loss design.
Start with the room
- Measure the length, width and ceiling height in metres.
- Consider insulation, glazing, external walls and the desired room temperature.
- Use the room BTU calculator for a starting estimate, or ask an installer for a room-by-room heat-loss calculation.
Keep the units clear
Radiator output is commonly quoted in watts or BTU per hour (BTU/h). One watt is approximately 3.412 BTU/h. Do not treat a watts-based estimate as a BTU figure without converting it.
Compare the product output
Check whether the rating is stated at ΔT50 or another temperature difference. A central heating towel radiator will deliver less heat when run at lower water temperatures. Use the manufacturer’s correction figures; a heat pump installation needs particular attention to this.
If a towel rail is not enough
Choose a model with suitable output and installation dimensions, or plan supplementary bathroom heating. More width or height can help but does not guarantee a particular heat output.
