Quick answer
Care for a towel radiator by keeping the finish clean and dry, checking for leaks and following the product’s maintenance instructions. Cold spots, pressure loss or persistent corrosion can have several causes, so diagnose the problem before replacing parts or adding chemicals.
A rust mark can come from surface contamination or from damage to the chrome plating and steel beneath it. Cleaning may improve a surface mark, but it cannot rebuild damaged plating or repair corrosion that has weakened a radiator.
Start with gentle cleaning
- Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool.
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth and a mild cleaner permitted by the radiator manufacturer. Test an unobtrusive area first.
- Remove cleaner residue with a damp cloth and dry the surface carefully.
- Avoid abrasive pads, wire wool, strong acids and unapproved polishing compounds; these can damage the finish.
When cleaning is not enough
Flaking plating, pitting, recurring rust or a leak needs further attention. Contact the supplier or a heating engineer rather than sanding through the finish or relying on a cosmetic repair. A leaking radiator should be assessed promptly.
Reduce repeat corrosion
Keep the finish dry, deal with leaks and improve bathroom ventilation. Follow the product’s cleaning instructions and check any warranty conditions before using a treatment.
